Practices of Rajab Shahrullah by Shaykh Adnan Kabbani

Translation of Mawlana Shaykh Adnan Kabbani’s Jummah Khutbah on 1st April 2016 / 25th Jumada’tul Thani 1436AH

O Believers who are present here! Fear Allah and obey Him! Allah is with those who fear Him and with those who perform good deeds.

Allah Almighty have chosen and blessed Prophet (s) from the all previous prophets and their nations as Prophet (s) said, “I am the leader of all Children of Adam and I am not proud. Adam and all his descendants are under my Liwaa al-Hamd (Flag of Prophet (s) on the Day of Judgement. ”

Allah Almighty is ever honouring and is ever kind to those who are close to Allah Almighty. As Sayyidina Abu Bakr As-Siddiq (RA) was in the cave of Ath-Thawr with Prophet ﷺ and with the presence of Allah Almighty.

Allah Almighty has chosen certain months and holy days and the hypocrites and innovators will do their best to ignore these special days. For they will always be under the feet of Ahlus Sunnah wal Jammah until the Day of Judgement.

When Allah has gifted us these special days for the Ummah to come closer to Allah Almighty, as these months are light upon light. Forgiveness is granted and intercession for the Ummah of Prophet ﷺ .

Prophet (s) said, “Indeed Rajab is the Month of Allah, Sha’ban is my month and Ramadan is the month of my nation.”

Their likeness is like the other sacred months of the year, Dhil Qi’dah, Dhi’l Hijjah and Muharram al-Haraam and Rabi Al-Awwal. Every month has special virtues associated with the miracles of Prophet (s) which are honoured in the Divine Presence.

These months are chosen for seclusions (Khalawat) and training of the soul (Riyaadat) for the Prophets first as Musa spent 40 days in the service of his Lord. Prophet ﷺ spent 20 years in seclusions away from people in the cave of Hira every Ramadan. Showing honour for the command of Allah Almighty until his physical body had become annihilated into his Spiritual body declaring His Prophethood.

Sayyidina Anas (RA) narrates that Prophet ﷺ said.

Whoever fasts a day from the Month of Rajab with Imaan and hoping for Allah’s reward, they will be bestowed with RidwanAllah Al-Akbar (The greatest pleasure of Allah Almighty) and be placed in Firdaws al Alaa. ”

This is just granted for fasting one day in Rajab.

Prophet  said, “Respect the month of Rajab! Allah will respect you with a thousand miracles on Yaum’ul Qiyamah.” As this is the month of Allah, you if respect it. It is as if you have respected and honoured Allah Almighty.

Prophet ﷺ said. “Whoever fasts the first (1st), middle (15th) and the last day (29th/30th) of Rajab, all their sins are taken away as if they are new-born from their mother.”

Prophet ﷺ said, “Rajab’s superiority over all the months is like The Qur’an’s superiority over all other speech.” For all other speech is from creation whereas the Speech of the Qur’an is from Allah Almighty.

Prophet ﷺ said, “Rajab is specially associated with forgiveness from Allah Almighty, Sha’ban is specially associated with the Shafa’ah of RasoolAllah ﷺ and Ramadan is specially associated with the endless grants and gifts from the Divinely presence of Allah Almighty where its beginning is mercy, it’s middle is forgiveness and its end is Freedom from Hellfire.”  And all the gifts of Rajab and Sha’ban is given in Ramadan.

The Month of Sha’ban is a month of love and respecting Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ. The Greatness of Sha’ban is like the Greatness of Prophet ﷺ over all creation in the sight of Allah Almighty.

Prophet ﷺ said, “Increase in abundance your Istighfar for indeed Allah Almighty in every hour from the hours of the month of Rajab is freeing people from Hellfire and there are heavenly cities that cannot be entered except by fasting the days of Rajab.”

The Prophet ﷺ said, “These heavenly cities are above the Arsh.” They are not from the 8 paradises rather they are from Al-Firdaws al-Alaa Fee maq’adi sidqin ‘inda Maleekim Muqtadir.

Indeed with Allah Almighty are heavenly cities that no one can enter except through fasting the days of Rajab. Prophet ﷺ said. “Know that Rajab is one  of the sacred months.” and Allah forgives the sinners from the Ummah of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ.  Any good deeds done in this months is taken directly by the Divinely Hand of Power of Allah Almighty and no interference from the Malaikah during this month.

Prophet ﷺ said, “Whoever fasts the 15th of Rajab, it will be as if they fasted and prayed 30 years with perfection. So it’s recommended to fast the 1st, 15th and 30th Rajab as well as every Monday and Thursday in the months of Rajab and Sha’ban. It will be rewarded as if you fasted the whole month.

Prophet ﷺ said. “That none of you should neglect the first Friday night in Rajab, for it is the night that all the angels call the Night of Desires (Laylat’ul Raghaib). Because is because, by the time the first third of the night ( after Ishaa for 3 hours) has elapsed, there will not be a single angel still at large in the heavens, nor in any region of the earth except they will be gathered together at the Ka’ba and the area surrounding it. Allah Almighty will condescend to notice that they have assembled there and He will say: “My angels, ask Me for whatever you wish!” Their response to this will be:  “Our Lord the request we wish to make is that You grant forgiveness to those who faithfully keep the fast in Rajab,” whereupon Allah Almighty will them: “That I have already done!”

Anas (RA) narrates from Mu’adh (RA) who were with RasoolAllah ﷺ and said, ” whoever fasts a day from the month of Rajab, He will see the divinely face of Allah Almighty and enter into Paradise without any accounting.”

In this great month, we have Laylat’ul Isra wa’l Miraj where Prophet ﷺ said. “If someone keeps the fast on the 27th of Rajab, he will be credited with the same reward s that which is earned by fasting and praying for 60 months.”

Sayyidina Salman al-Farsi (RA) narrates from Sayyidina Abu Hurayrah (RA) that Prophet ﷺ said,” Indeed in Rajab contains a very special day and a very special night. If someone fasts during that day and keeps worship throughout that night, he will be entitled to a reward like the one that would earned by a person who fasted for a hundred years and who kept worship throughout all the nights in that period.”

The adab of Rajab is as follows. May Allah make us from the repenters, from the happy ones, from the Siddiqeen and make us under the Banner of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ on Yaum’ul Qiyamah and forgive us for our respecting his month of Rajab and practice these adab daily in the month of Rajab.

On the first night of Rajab, they make Ghusl after Asr and pray 2 ra’kats Sunnat’ul Wudhu wa’l Ghusl and recites this dua:

Oh Allah, to you the applicants apply this night, to You the aspirants aspire, and for Your gracious bounty and beneficence the seekers look in hope. You have special favors (nafahat) to bestow this night, and prizes and gifts and presents. You will bestow them upon whomever You choose from among Your servants, and You will withhold them from those who are not ready to receive your providential care (inaya).

Well, here am I, Your servant who is sorely in need of You, hoping for gracious bounty and beneficence! If it please You, O my master (Yaa Mawlaya), to bestow Your grace this night upon one of Your creatures, and if You will be so generous as to grant him a favor out of Your kindness, then bless Muhammad and his family, and let me enjoy Your superabundance and beneficence, O Lord of All the Worlds ( Yaa Rabba’l – Alamin).” – Listen to the du’a in Arabic at 17:18 on YouTube.

Whoever reads this du’a, it is Wajib for Shafa’ah of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ to be bestowed on the reader and all their sins to be forgiven like a newborn baby and RidwanAllah Al-Akbar to be dressed upon the reader.

From the 1st Rajab til 10th Rajab – Read :

SubhaanAllah al-Hayy al-Qayyum 100x

La ilaha illa Anta Subhanaka inni kuntu min azzalimin 100x

Suboohun qudoos rabbuna wa rabbu malaikatuhu wa’l ruh 100x

From the 10th Rajab til 20th Rajab – Read:

SubhaanAllah Al-Ahad As-Samad 100x

La ilaha illa Anta Subhanaka inni kuntu min azzalimin 100x

Astaghfirullah al-Azeem wa atubu ilayh 100x

From the 20th Rajab til 30th Rajab – Read:

SubhaanAllahi’l Ar Rauf x 100

La ilaha illa Anta Subhanaka inni kuntu min azzalimin 100x

Astaghfirullah al Azeem wa atubu ilayh 100x

Prophet ﷺ said to his Companion, who is also the 3rd GrandShaykh of the Naqshbandi order, Sayyidina Salman al-Farisi:

O Salman, Allah will surely erase all the sins from the record of any believing man, or any believing woman, who performs 30 raka’at of sunnat prayer, in the course of this month, reciting in each raka’at, Surah al-Fatihah, followed by Surah al-Ikhlaas 5 times, followed by Surah al-Kafiroon 5 times. That man or woman will be granted the same reward as a person who has fasted throughout the entire month. He or she will be treated as one of those who continue to perform the ritual prayer right through to the following year, and will be credited every day with a deed as noble as that of one of the martyrs of the battle of Badr.

For every day of fasting in Rajab, the worship of an entire year will be recorded in favor of the believer concerned, whose credit will be enhanced by a thousand degrees. If the believer keeps the fast during the whole month, as well as performing this particular 30 raka’at salah, Allah will deliver him from the Fire of Hell and declare that he or she is entitled to enter the garden of Paradise, therein to dwell in the vicinity of Allah Almighty.”

Sayyidina Jibreel (as) then added, “Oh Muhammad, this is a clear sign to mark the distinction between true believers and the Mushrikeen (unbelievers) and Munafiqeen (hypocrites), because the hypocrites do not perform this prayer.”

This special prayer is done in this manner:

10 rakaats (5 sets of 2 rakaats) are done on the first day of Rajab.

10 rakaats (5 sets of 2 rakaats) are done in the middle of Rajab (15th Rajab).

10 rakaat (5 sets of 2 rakaats) are done at the end of the month (30th Rajab)

Once the first ten rakaats are done, raise your hands and recite:

La ilaha illallahu Wahdahu la sharikalah, lahul mulku, walahul hamdu, yuhyi wa yumitu, wa Huwa hayyun la yamoot, bi ya dihil khairu, wa Huwa ‘ala kulli shain’in Qadeeer.

Allahumma laa maani’a lima a’taita, wa laa mu’tiya lima mana’ta, wa laa, yanfa’u zhaljaddi, minkali jadd.

There is no God except Allah, Alone. No partner has He. To Him belongs the kingdom and to Him belongs the praise, He brings to life and causes death, while He is Ever-Living and never dies. All goodness is in His Hand, and He is Powerful over all things.

O Allah, no one can withhold what You have given, and no one can give what You have withheld, nor will the worldly fortune of the possessor of such fortune benefit him, if he does not attain the fortune that comes from You (in the hereafter).

Then you must rub your face with your hands, and at this point, you have completed the first ten raka’ats.”

On the 15th day of Rajab. Do perform the 10 raka’at prayer as explained above. Once the ten rakaats are done, raise your hands, and recite (note that it is different from that of the first ten days):
La ilaha illallahu Wahdahu la sharikalah, lahul mulku, walahul hamdu, yuhyi wa yumitu, wa Huwa hayyun la yamoot, bi ya dihil khairu, wa Huwa ‘ala kulli shain’in Qadeeer.
Ilahan, Waahidan, Ahadan, Samadan, Fardan, Witraa. Laa yattakhidhu sohibatan wa laa waladaa.

There is no God except Allah, Alone. No partner has He. To Him belongs the kingdom and to Him belongs the praise, He brings to life and causes death, while He is Ever-Living and never dies. All goodness is in His Hand, and He is Powerful over all things.

(I worship Him) as God, Single, One, Everlasting, Alone, Unique. He takes unto Himself, neither female consort nor son.}

Then you must rub your face with your hands, and at this point, you have completed the second ten raka’ats.”

Once the last ten raka’ats are done, raise your hands, and recite:

There is no God except Allah, Alone. No partner has He. To him belongs the kingdom and to Him belongs the praise, He brings to life and causes death, while He is Ever-Living and never dies. All goodness is in His Hand, and He is Powerful over all things.

May Allah bless our master Muhammad (saw) and the pure members of his family. There is neither any power nor any strength except with Allah, the Most High, the Almighty.
You should then ask for whatever you need, whereupon He will surely give you a positive response to your prayer of supplication (du’a). Allah will place 70 ditches between you and Hell, and each of these ditches will be as wide as the distance between the earth and heavens above. For every raka’at of prayer you have performed, He will reward you as if you performed one million raka’ats. Allah will also inscribe on your record, an exemption from the Fire of Hell and a permit to cross the narrow bridge (Sirat).”

On 27th Rajab, After Salat’ul Isha , Pray 4 Ra’kats Salat’ul Tasbih and 2 Rakats Salat’ul Shukr imitating Prophet  (s) with all 124,000 Prophets at Bayt’ul Maqdis. In every rakah, recite Surah al-Ikhlaas 20 times.

After Taslim, recite ” Bismillāhi ’r-Raħmāni ’r-Raħīm. Allāhumma innī as’aluka bi mushāhadati asrāri ’l-muħibbīn wa bi ’l-khalwati ’llatī khašašta bihā sayyid al-mursalīn ħīna asrayta bihi laylat assāb¿i wa ’l-ishrīn an tarħam qalbī al- ħazīn wa tujīb dawatī yā Akram alAkramīn yā Arħamar-Rāħimīn. Wa šalla-Allāhu alā sayyidinā Muħammadin wa alā ālihi wa šāħbihi wa sallim ajmāīn.

Every day, Read the Adab of tariqah with invoking the masters of Naqshbandi tariqah. Then connecting yourself with Allah Almighty, with Sayyidina Muhammad, With Mawlana Shaykh Nazim by saying

 Allahu Allahu Allahu Haqq x3

Read:

1500 Allah (by Tongue)

1500 Allah (by Heart)

300 – 500 Salawat

100 Surah al Ikhlaas ( or 1 juz of Qur’an)

100 Salawat ( or 1 juz of Dala’il al-Khayrat)

Whomsoever does this dhikr or more will achieve the greatest happiness of this Dunya and of Akhirah and will receive from Allah Almighty what no eye has ever seen, what no ear has ever heard and what no mind has ever imagined.

Falaa tarudani ya Rabbi, ya Allah khaaiban hatta tuwassilani ilaa dhaakal maqaam – al maqaamul fardani.

O my Lord, I am moving and stepping forward for the Station of Annihilation in the Divine Presence. Oh my Lord, O Allah Subhana wa Ta’ala, I am asking you to vanish me in Your Existence and, O my Lord, I am moving toward your ocean of Unity, the Ocean of Wahdaniyah, O my Lord, don’t reject me until I reach the unique Maqam al Fardani.

DU’A ُ– Ya Rabbi, Ya Allah haithu hadha ashShahru huwa shahruka, jetuka da’ifan wa nawian an ‘amala ‘amalan bidon ‘iwadun aw an yakona fihi talaban lil fadilati qasidan iyyaka Ilahi anta maqsodi wa ridaka matlobi.

O my Lord, since this month is your month – Rajabun Shahrullah (Rajab Month of Allah)– I came to you as a weak guest and intending to worship You, without asking anything in return. My God, You are my aim, and Your good pleasure is what I seek. That is why I am coming, please don’t reject me.

O my Lord, all my life I spent in kufr (disbelief) and hidden shirk (polytheism), and bad behavior, and I am declaring wholeheartedly that I did not do any deed that is accepted by You. You are Allah, Who never threw away anyone that came to Your door. You are Allah, and no one came to Your door by his deeds, but (only) by Your grant and reward

O my Lord, I have given all my affairs into Your hands – my life, my death, my afterlife, and Judgment Day. All my affairs I have transferred to You and You are the One Who controls me. O my Lord, I do not possess anything with my nafs (ego) and my soul. I cannot give good to myself or bad to myself, or life to myself, or death to myself, but I have transferred all my accounts, and all Your judgment on me, and all Your questions to me and all my answers; I have transferred to you. Whatever You want to do with me, You do. My neck is in Your hand. I am helpless from answering Your questions, even the smallest answer I cannot answer. (With all this weakness, and helplessness, and hopelessness, I am coming to Your door.)

Law kana laka Ya Rabbi, babayni ahada huma mukhasasun lit taibeena min ‘ibadikal mumineen wal aakharu lit taibeena min ‘ibadikal ‘aaseen. Ji tuka ya Allah, nahwo babikal ladhi yahtaju an yadkhula minho ‘ibadukal ‘aaseen. Wa innani uqirru wa a’ tariff annahu yajibu an ujaddida Islami wa Imani min hadhal bab li izharil ‘ajzi.

O my Lord, if you had two doors for Your servant to enter through – one for the believers from Your servants and one for the unbeliever from Your servants – I am coming to You from the door that the unbeliever needs to come through. And I am declaring and believing this is the only door for me to come through. I am saying to You that I have to renew my Islam (Shahada – testimony of faith) and my Iman (faith), from this door to show humility and helplessness.

This Deed and this Shahada is the first deed for me after I am pronouncing the Shahada and entering Islam and You are my Wakeel (protector) from whence we say: God is the Protector and Witnes over what we say,

O my Lord, Ya Allah, from the day You created my dharrah (atom), my essence, and from the day You entered my soul to my body, and from the day my soul came from absolute abstract to existence, and came in to this world, until this day; how much of the disobedience has appeared from me and my essence, and from my soul and my body, spiritually and physically! I am regretting them all, and regretting what I did, and coming back to You asking forgiveness and repentance.

In the name of Allah, the All-Beneficent, the All-Merciful

O Allah, I ask forgiveness of You for everything for which I repented to You then returned to. And I ask forgiveness of You for everything I displeased You with and all that concerns me with which You are displeased. And I ask forgiveness of You for the favors which I used for increasing my disobedience towards You. And I ask forgiveness of You for the sins which no one knows except You and no one sees except You and nothing encompasses except Your Mercy and nothing delivers from except Your forgiveness and clemency. There is no god except You alone. You are the Most High, and I was one of the [self] oppressors!

O Allah, I ask forgiveness of You for the injustice I committed against Your servants. Whatever of Your male or female servants whom I have hurt, physically or in their dignity or in their property give them of Your bounty which lacks nothing. And I ask You to honor me with Your mercy which encompasses all things. Do not humble me with Your punishment but give me what I ask of You, for I am in great need of Your mercy, O Most Merciful of the merciful. May Allah send blessings upon Muhammad and upon all his companions. There is no power and no might except in Allah the High, the Exalted.

Blessings and Peace upon Sayyidina Muhammad, his Family, and his Companions.

Safar Awrad

From Al-Futuhat al-Haqqaniyyah by Shaykh Adnan Kabbani:

  1. Shahadatain (3 times).
  2. Astaghfirullah (300 times).
  3. Give Sadaqah daily for the sake of Allah Almighty with the intention to lift away afflictions and misfortunes. It is a good practice, as done by Grandshaykh ‘Abdullah q.s., to make Qurban on the 27th day of Safar for the sake of Allah Almighty.
  4. Every day recite Surah Al-Fil (7 times) and Ayat al-Kursi (7 times).

On the final Wednesday of Safar, keep to the following adab:

  1. Shahadatain (3 times).
  2. Astaghfirullah (300 times).
  3. Ayat al-Kursi (7 times).
  4. Surah Al-Fil (7 times), reading them all upon oneself and for one’s family.

It is desirable to refrain from going out of one’s house on that day. If one should go out, keep to the adab and make haste to return home when one’s needs have been met. Grandshaykh q.s. said: “On the final Wednesday of the month of Safar, 70,000 afflictions (bala’) befall the world. The one who keeps to this adab that we mentioned, he will be protected by Allah Almighty.”

Whoever reads the names of these guided ones daily, Allah will open guidance to their heart as through them, they will be guided. Whoever seeks forgiveness from Allah for their sake, or for resolution of a problem, relief from difficulty, or for a marriage. For the sake of these AwliyaAllah. Allah will cure illness, solve problems, remove difficulties, grant weddings, etc.

Shaykh Sharafuddin Ad-Dagestani (Q) extracted this precious wisdom of the foremost awliya in the time of Sayyidina Mahdi Alayhis Salaam as a benefit for the sake of the Ummah. The few who are authorized recite those blessed names and meet those awliya daily, for when you knock at the door of someone you know, they greet you. This is why it was such an important undertaking: to reveal these holy souls and utilize their heavenly powers.

Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (Q) said, “Sayyidina Mahdi alayhis salaam and his 7 Grand Wazeers, 99 Caliphs and 313 Grand Murshids are all in the Naqshbandi Tariqah.”

Yā sayyid as-sādāt wa nūr al-mawjudāt, yā man hūwa al-malja’u liman massahu ḍaymun wa ghammun wa alam. The Prayer of Love – Salat’ul Hubb

Prayer of Love

Taught by Shaykh Adnan Kabbani last Ramadan, and an amanah to us from our beloved Shaykh Raja Ashman Shah (q).

Last Ramadhan, our much-loved Shaykh Adnan Kabbani spent the first ten blessed days of Ramadhan in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, with Maulana’s mureeds. Despite suffering from excruciating back pain, he valiantly continued to spend time with the mureeds, even giving us up to three Suhbahs on certain days and the many Jewels that were revealed in the Suhbahs during those ten beautiful days, took our breath away. Terawih prayers with him and our late Shaykh Raja Ashman Shah (q), was heavenly and surreal.

One of those priceless Jewels shared with us,was this special prayer, that Maulana Shaykh Nazim had instructed mureeds to do, a special hajat prayer, to pray for Shaykh Adnan’s safety and health, during his approaching spine operation that Ramadhan. Shaykh Adnan later revealed that this special hajat prayer, was also known as Solat Sunnatul Hubb, the Prayer of those seeking Divine Love, and it was one of the hidden deeds of Awliya who did it before doing Muroqabah to their Master, just before Fajr time..

In the days before his sudden passing, Shaykh Raja Ashman spoke of how, many mureeds had forgotten and neglected this prayer, and how important it was for us to do this prayer regularly, as it was the prayer of one who sought nothing, but His Love. In a poignant and tearful Suhbah given at his Maqam the day of his passing, Shaykh Bahauddeen Adil said that Shaykh Raja Ashman himself proved it, by living only for the Love of Maula, not Dunia, despite having Dunia at his feet. He never looked once at this carcass we call Dunia, his eyes were firmly fixed on attaining Divine Love.

It is with this intention in mind, that is, to revive the performance of this prayer, that this short reminder to myself and all lovers, has been posted. In the coming days, we shall post more from the Jewels that Shaykh Adnan Kabbani and our much-missed Shaykh Raja Ashman Shah (q), had shared with mureeds.

How to perform it

Below is the ‘Solatul-Hubb’ or the ‘Prayer of Love’ that Shaykh Adnan Kabbani taught, it is done just prior to Muraqabah, before Fajr prayers.

Mawlana Shaykh Nazim also says that is a special Solat Hajat that we can do when a need arises.

It is very similar to solatul tasabih, but instead of a 4 raka’at prayer that Sunnat tasabih is, this sunnat prayer is only 2 raka’ats long.

  1. In the first raka’at, before reciting Surah Fatihah, recite ‘Subbuhun Qudduusun, Robbuna wa robbul malaikati warruuh’, fifteen times. Recite it ten times after reading the surah, & ten times in ruku’, ten times in i’tidal, ten times in sujud, ten times while sitting & ten times in sujud again, making 75 times in the that first raka’at. It is best to read two Surah Ikhlas after Fatihah in that raka’at.
  2. In the second raka’at, before reciting Surah Fatihah, recite Selawat/ Darood Shareef, fifteen times. Recite it ten times after reading the surah, & ten times in ruku’, ten times in i’tidal, ten times in sujud, ten times while sitting & ten times in sujud again, making 75 times in the that second raka’at. It is best to read one Surah Ikhlas after Fatihah in that raka’at.

After that, make your do’as and ask Allah to grant you his Love, the Love of those He Loves, and the Love of the Actions, that lead you to His Love.

Do also remember always to recite al-Fatihah for the good health and long life of Sultanul Awliya Shaykh Nazim Al Haqqani, for the continued recovery and improvement of Shaykh Adnan Kabbani’s health, and for the Pure Soul of Shaykh Raja Ashman Shah (q). May Allah support us always, with the support that He bestows upon them. Ameen.

Connect your heart to the heart of our master Sultanul Awliya Maulana Shaykh Nazim, in Muroqabah, after that.

Naqshbandi Adab of Tarawih by Shaykh Adnan Kabbani

DSC_0068.JPGThe full sequence of Tarawih, as done by our beloved Mawlana Shaykh Adnan Kabbani

After Azaan of Ishaa (full version, with the Salawats at the end), the 4 rak’aat sunnah (can be done in sets of 2) before Ishaa is done, followed by Ishaa Fard, and the sunnah after Ishaa. The Shaykh, as always, is clad in loose Naqshbandi Sunnah clothing, complete with turban (with tail), beard, ring (on the ring finger of his right hand) and his walking stick, which he often places in front of him, or to one side, when he is in prayer.

Before starting the Tarawih prayer

As with every amal, Shaykh begins with the recitation Ta’awuz and Basmalah, and 3 Shahadahs, 100 Istighfar, and three times Surah Ikhlas. He said that any Fardh prayer or Qur’an recitation that does not begin with this, is rejected, as one must renew ones faith, be clean and be sincere before starting any good deed.

Shaykh Adnan then makes this intention to fast, just before the Tarawih prayer every night of Ramadan.

He says:

“I am intending to fast in Ramadan tomorrow, (he mentions the day, i.e. Wednesday), for the sake of Allah Almighty, and upon the intention of GrandShaykh and Mawlana Shaykh Nazim, and I am intending its reward to be given to Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم as a gift and Mawlid to him, to be kept in His ‘bank’, till the Day of Yaum’ul Qiyamah.”

He then makes intention to perform 20 Raka’ats of Tarawih and 3 Raka’at of Witr with the same niyyah (intentions) above.

He then reads:

  • Liqo’ullahi yurja fissiyam, wa nurul qalbi fil qiyam (Shaykh raises his hands like in du’a, and wipes his face at this time), ta’alallah zhul arshil majeed (Shaykh raises his hands higher than the first time, and wipes his face again.)
  • Assolatul jami’a, solatut-terawihi athaabakumullah
  • Annabi yash fa’u limay yu solli ‘alaih, allahumma solli ‘ala Muhammadin wa ‘ala ‘alihi Muhammadin wasallim
  • Allahumma inna nas alukal jannata, wa na ‘uzubika minannar
  • Ya Subhaan

First set of two rak’aats

The Shaykh then uses his miswak/siwak, as he does for every solat, do’a and recitation of the Qur’an that he performs. He then leads two very short raka’ats in which only 2 to 3 Ayats of a Surah are read after Surah al-Fatihah. This is done for the entire 20 raka’ats, so that it is completed quickly, and this is the Sunnah of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, so that weak and old members of the congregation, sick ones, children, nursing mothers and busy people are not burdened by a very long prayer.

In each raka’at, the Shaykh begins with an inaudible Ta’awuz (A’uzubillah…) and an audible Basmalah, before reading Surah al-Fatihah. He then goes onto the reading of the Surah, without reading Ta’awuz or Basmalah again.

After finishing the first two raka’ats, the Shaykh reads:

  • Liqo’ullahi yurja fissiyam, wa nurul qalbi fil qiyam (Shaykh raises his hands like in do’a, and wipes his face at this time), ta’alallah zhul arshil majeed (Shaykh raises his hands higher than the first time, and wipes his face again.)
  • Assolatul jami’a, solatut-terawihi athaabakumullah
  • Annabi yash fa’u liman yu solli ‘alaih, allahumma solli ‘ala Muhammadin wa ‘ala ‘alihi Muhammadin wasallim
  • Ya Sultaan

Second set of two raka’ats

Again beginning with the miswak, and leading very short raka’ats, the Shaykh concludes the prayer and reads after concluding this second set of Tarawih prayers:

  • La ila ha illallah hu wahdahu lasharikalah, lahul mulku walahul hamdu, yuhyi wa yu meetu, wa huwa ‘ala kulli shain ing qadeer.
  • Subhanallahi walhamdulillahi wa la ila ha illallah hu allahu akbar. Wa la haula wa la quwwata illa billahil ‘aliyyil azheem. (Glory be to Allah, and praise is due to Allah, and there is no God but Allah, and Allah is the greatest. And there is no power and strength except in Allah, the Exalted, the Sublime.)
  • Subhanallahi ‘adada khaliqihi, wa ridho nafsihi, wa zeenata arshihi, wa midaa da kalimatih. (Glory be to Allah, as much as the number of His Creations, as much as is pleasing to Him, and as much as the Weight of his Throne, and as much as the ink (which would be used to write) His Words.)
  • Ya Rahman

  • Allahumma solli ‘ala Muhammadin wa ‘ala ‘alihi Muhammadin wasallim
  • Ya Hannan

  • Subhanallahi ‘adada khaliqihi, wa ridho nafsihi, wa zeenata arshihi, wa midaa da kalimatih. (Glory be to Allah, as much as the number of His Creations, as much as is pleasing to Him, and as much as the Weight of his Throne, and as much as the ink (which would be used to write) His Words.)

Tenth (final) set of two raka’ats

Again beginning with the miswak, and leading very short raka’ats, the Shaykh concludes the prayer and reads after concluding this final set of Tarawih prayers:

  • Yaa Allah

Salat’ul Witr

Except for Witr prayers on the night of the 15th and 16th of Ramadan, the Shaykh prays this as a 3 raka’at prayer with one salaam at the end, just as Mawlana Shaykh Nazim does it. However, on the nights of the 15th and 16th of Ramadhan, the Shaykh prays Witr as a 2 raka’at prayer plus a 1 raka’at prayer. The reasons are explained in the next heading.

The Imam reads aloud for all three raka’ats, including the Du’a Qunoot.

  • In the first raka’at, after Surah Fatihah, Shaykh reads Surah al-Ikhlas.
  • In the second raka’at, after Surah Fatihah, Shaykh reads Surah al-Falaq.
  • In the final raka’at, after Surah Fatihah, Shaykh reads Surah an-Nas.

He reads the Du’a Qunoot in the final raka’at of Witr prayer, throughout all of Ramadan.

In addition to the Du’a Qunoot that is read in local mosques, Shaykh Adnan adds the following verses to the Du’a Qunoot (which are also read in Fajr prayers).

  • Allahummak shif ‘anna minal balaa ya ma la yakshifuhu ghayruk. (Oh Allah! Lift from us trials which no one can but You can.)
  • Allahumas qinal ghaytha suqya rahmatin wa la taj ‘alna minal qaniteen. (Oh Allah! Give us to drink from the rain of Your Mercy, and let us not be of the despondent.)
  • Rabbighfir warham wa anta khayrur rahimeen. (Lord, forgive and have Mercy, for you are the Most Merciful.)
  • Allahummaf tah lana mil-ladungka fathan qareeban, wa anta khayrul fatiheen. (Oh Allah! Open for us a manifest closeness, for You are the best of Openers)
  • Allahumma innaka ‘afuwun kareem tuhibbul, ‘afwa fa’ fu anna wa yardha anna ya Kareem. (Oh Allah, You Love to forgive generously, so please forgive me and be pleased with me, O Generous One).
  •  (Of the wrongdoers, the last remnant was cut off. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds.) (Surah Al-An’am 6:45)

Witr on the nights of the 15th and 16th of Ramadan

As mentioned above, on these nights, the Witr prayer is split into a 2 raka’at prayer and a 1 raka’at prayer. This is in honour of the middle of Ramadan, as on the 16th night, Sayyidina Jibrail (as), together with 5000 Angels, descend to the earth and give salaams to the believers, and they will remain on earth till Fajr after the Night of Power (Laylatul Qadr).

On the night of the 16th and on the night of Laylatul Qadr, after reciting Surah Fatihah, Shaykh Adnan recites Surah ‘Ala in the first raka’at, Surah Kafiroon in the second, and the remaining 3 Quls in the final raka’at.

After the 2 raka’at prayer is completed, the Shaykh reads:

  • Allahumma solli ‘ala Muhammadin wa ‘ala ‘alihi Muhammadin wasallim
  • Ya Ahad.

He then completes the final raka’at of Witr, reciting Surah al-Fatihah and Surah an-Nas, as well as Qunoot.
